HBCU homecoming 2026 delivered a dramatic finish at Grambling State, where receiver Tyson George caught the winning touchdown pass with 19 seconds remaining in a 63-59 victory over Alcorn State.
Grambling’s 63-59 victory over Alcorn State led a weekend of contrasting homecoming results across historically Black colleges and universities. Arkansas-Pine Bluff spoiled Southern’s celebration, Fayetteville State held off Livingstone, and visiting teams won at Bluefield State and West Virginia State. Beyond the stadiums, official homecoming programs connected alumni gatherings with music, student recognition and worship.
Grambling finishes a remarkable comeback
Grambling State erased a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit Saturday at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium, scoring three touchdowns in the final 6:11 to defeat Alcorn State.
Quarterback Ashton Frye connected with George on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 19 seconds remaining. The winning drive began at Grambling’s own 24-yard line, with Frye finding Jordan Bride for key completions before delivering the decisive throw.
George finished with six receptions for 96 yards and three touchdowns. Frye passed for 203 yards and two touchdowns and added 61 rushing yards and two rushing scores.
The Tigers improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Alcorn fell to 3-3 and 2-1. For Grambling, the final minutes transformed a substantial deficit into the weekend’s most dramatic homecoming finish.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff takes control at Southern
Southern’s homecoming ended with a commanding performance from its visitors.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff defeated the Jaguars 41-10 at A.W. Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge. Golden Lions quarterback Garrison Davis completed 15 of 22 passes for 154 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for another 92 yards.
UAPB rushed for 299 yards as a team. Jalen Williams also supplied crucial field position, returning three kickoffs for 167 yards. The ensuing possessions produced a combined 17 points.
The Golden Lions improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the SWAC. Coach Alonzo Hampton described the result to the Pine Bluff Commercial as the best victory of his tenure.
Southern’s official homecoming theme was “Nobody Does It Better.” Its game preview emphasized the traditions surrounding the matchup, including tailgating, the Human Jukebox marching band and Dancing Dolls. Saturday also marked Marshall Faulk’s first Southern homecoming as head coach, placing a new football chapter within a familiar cultural setting.
Fayetteville State holds off Livingstone at Stonecoming
Livingstone’s Stonecoming football game drew an announced attendance of 4,926 at Alumni Memorial Stadium, according to the CIAA’s official box score.
Fayetteville State won 28-20 after building a 21-0 halftime advantage. Livingstone scored all 20 of its points after halftime, but the Broncos added a fourth-quarter touchdown and held on.
Fayetteville State improved to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Livingstone fell to 2-4 and 2-3.
Football was one component of Livingstone’s Sept. 27-Oct. 3 homecoming program. The college’s published schedule included a coronation, fashion show, career and graduate expo, step show and Saturday parade.
An alumni concert featuring Keith Sweat, Travis Porter and Chubb Rock was also advertised. Saturday admission bundled the football game with concert access, vendor row and tailgate areas, reflecting a celebration designed around several generations of students and alumni.
Visiting teams win in West Virginia
Johnson C. Smith defeated Bluefield State 51-0 at Mitchell Stadium. The CIAA’s official box score recorded attendance of 904 and rainy conditions.
The Golden Bulls scored in every quarter, including 27 first-half points. Johnson C. Smith improved to 4-1 overall, while Bluefield State fell to 0-6.
West Virginia State’s homecoming produced a much closer finish. West Liberty defeated the Yellow Jackets 41-38, according to the Mountain East Conference scoreboard.
HBCU Homecoming 2026: Celebrations Beyond Football
Morris Brown College’s official calendar placed homecoming week from Sept. 27 through Oct. 4, with its homecoming ceremony listed for Saturday. The college advertised the Oct. 3 celebration as free and centered its invitation on tradition, pride, resurgence and connections across generations.
At Barber-Scotia College, the official Oct. 1-4 alumni program carried the theme “Past. Pride. Legacy.” Its schedule included a golf tournament, convocation, alumni reception, annual alumni meeting and Saturday evening gathering, followed by a Sunday worship service.
These programs highlight the breadth of HBCU homecoming 2026, with institutional memory, fellowship and alumni participation at the center of the weekend.
Rivalry and classic roundup
Howard defeated Hampton 27-13 in the Battle of the Real HU at Audi Field in Washington. Howard’s official recap reported attendance of 15,389 as the Bison snapped a three-game losing streak.
In Montgomery, Alabama, Morehouse edged Tuskegee 30-28 in the Morehouse-Tuskegee Classic. A 22-yard touchdown pass from Miles Scott to Savion Red put Morehouse ahead, and Tuskegee’s late 59-yard field-goal attempt missed.
Jackson State also won a close classic matchup, defeating Alabama A&M 31-28 in the Gulf Coast Challenge in Mobile, Alabama.
